Questions to ask an annuity professional

A useful conversation begins with clear expectations.

How this content is prepared

The useful takeaway: You should understand the recommendation, the alternatives and the professional’s compensation.

Establish the role

Ask who the professional represents, which products they can offer and which licenses apply to the conversation. A marketing introduction is not a product recommendation. Request the firm’s name and verify credentials through the appropriate regulator before sharing sensitive documents.

Ask for the reasoning

Have the professional connect the proposed contract to a specific goal in your plan. Ask which alternatives were considered and what would make the annuity inappropriate. An answer that relies entirely on a headline rate or bonus is incomplete.

Make compensation explicit

Ask how the professional and any introducing business are paid. Compensation can differ across products or relationships. Understanding the arrangement helps you evaluate potential conflicts; it does not by itself determine whether a recommendation is appropriate.

Leave with documents and time

Request the written quote, disclosures, surrender schedule and applicable prospectus. Summarize the trade-offs in your own words and ask for corrections. Include another decision-maker if helpful. Review the documents before committing funds and confirm the free-look provisions that apply to your contract and state.

Bring these questions

  • How are you paid if I buy this?
  • What alternatives did you consider?
  • Where can I verify your credentials?
